In a folder to theuse of straw in the farms herbiroves, theInstitute of thebreeding’sis focused on theincrease in the cost of the litter. Despite large disparities in the different regions and building types, it appears that the herds are growing faster than the surfaces of cereals cultivated by breeders.
” For several years, many of the alerts sent by the farmers, advisors and accountants. The weight of the purchases of straw in the expenses of farms ” warned the Institute of animal breeding in a folder dedicated to the use of straw in the farms herbivores. And for good reason, the average price of the straw in France has increased from 47 €/t in 2003 to 74 € in 2020.

The cattle are evolving faster than the surfaces of cereals.
Only 23% of dairy farmers and 11 % of the breeders allaitants are completely autonomous on straw. On average, a dairy farmer produces a little more than half of the straw than it consumes (54 %). A breeder breastfeeding provides in 40 % of the needs of his flock. The level of dependence is explained by the herds increased rapidly in the face of the surfaces in cereals owned by the breeders. ” The level of autonomy in straw was degraded by about 5 points in the course of the past decade “, comment on the Idele.
Therefore, costs related to the purchase of litter have increased 50 % over the last decade. The post purchase of litter represents 1.5 % of expenses common operating in dairy cows, is about 4.7 €/1000 l. For the cattle meat, the cost of the litter returns on average 8.2 €/100 kvv, or 3.5% of the cost of production.
These averages conceal, however, a significant disparity. The average cost of post purchase of litter is around 22 €/BMU. This average masks important differences. A quarter of the farms over €75/BMUS in 2020.
