Description

Little-Bluestem is a highly ornamental grass. The foliage has a fine texture and forms very dense mounds 45 to 60 cm high. The slender, blue-green stems often reach 1.60 m or more by September. They turn a radiant mahogany red with tufts of glossy white seeds in the autumn. The color lasts almost all winter. The perennial clumps reach 30 cm in diameter.

This species of mid-grass meadows gets its name from the bluish color at the base of the stems in spring. Most striking is the plant’s reddish color in autumn, which persists even in winter snow. The seeds, a fuzzy white when mature, are especially valuable to small birds in winter.
